Walk among six ancient stone circles on the hauntingly beautiful moorland of Machrie, dating back over 4,500 years — one of Scotland's most atmospheric and least-crowded prehistoric landscapes. This is Arran's answer to Stonehenge, without the crowds.
What to expect
The Mogabout bus winds along the single-track west coast road to the car park, from where a short moorland track leads to the circles. Your guide brings the stones to life — pointing out the tallest monolith (over 5m high), the buried cists, and the astronomical alignments. The silence and raw landscape create a genuinely otherworldly atmosphere. Other island highlights are woven into the same outing.
Good to know
The return journey from Brodick pier to Machrie takes about 30–40 minutes each way; allow a minimum of 3–4 hours total. Wear walking shoes and bring a waterproof. Book the Mogabout safari in advance at mogabout.com as it operates small vehicles and sells out.
