Descend to the upside-down West Lighthouse and watch hundreds of thousands of razorbills, guillemots, and puffins nesting on the dramatic basalt stacks — the finest seabird spectacle in Ireland.
What to expect
A short minibus ride from Church Bay whisks you across the island's moorland to the inverted West Lighthouse, perched dramatically above Bull Point. Rangers brief you on each species before you descend the viewing platform, binoculars in hand, to face thousands of seabirds at arm's length. The spectacle of puffins ferrying sand eels, guillemots jostling on ledges, and razorbills riding thermals is utterly arresting. Spring and early summer (May–July) deliver the full colony at peak numbers.
Good to know
Minibuses depart Church Bay harbour regularly; journey is about 15 min each way. Allow 2–3 hours on site. Pre-book the minibus at the harbour kiosk on arrival — seats fill quickly when tenders are busy. All-aboard is usually early evening; the Centre closes at 17:00, giving ample buffer.
