Hire premium bikes at Church Bay and follow the island's single traffic-free lane to the East Lighthouse — a leisurely 10 km ride through wildflower meadows, past ancient field systems, and out to a panorama spanning Scotland, the Mull of Kintyre, and Islay.
What to expect
The route from Church Bay to the East Lighthouse is gentle enough for any reasonably fit cyclist, rising through the island's central plateau before descending to the lighthouse above the sound. On clear days the view encompasses five countries: Ireland, Scotland, England (just), Wales, and the Isle of Man. Return via the northern loop to pass the ruins of Rathlin's medieval church and ancient drystone walls draped in sea campion. The road carries almost no motor traffic, making it as peaceful as cycling gets.
Good to know
Bikes are available for hire at the harbour from Soerneog View; hybrid and e-bikes are available. The full round trip to the East Lighthouse is around 20 km and takes 3–4 hours at a leisurely pace with stops. Helmets are included. Go early to secure e-bikes on busy ferry days. The road can be exposed and breezy — a light windproof layer is essential.
