Aqua World Ibaraki Prefectural Oarai Aquarium is Japan's largest aquarium and home to the greatest variety of shark species in the country — a stunning, world-class facility that rivals any marine attraction in Asia.
What to expect
Enter through a vast open-ocean tank where silhouetted sharks, rays, and schooling fish create a cinematic underwater panorama overhead. The shark zone — featuring over 20 species — is the centrepiece and the rarest such collection in Japan. Don't miss the sunfish (mola mola) tank, one of only a handful in the world, where these bizarre, disc-shaped giants drift slowly past the glass. Dolphin and seal performances add theatrical flair, while quieter jellyfish galleries offer meditative beauty. The gift shop offers exceptional marine-themed Japanese craft items.
Good to know
Located walking distance or a short taxi ride from the port. Allow 2.5–3 hours for a thorough visit. Check the daily show schedule online before visiting — dolphin performances and sunfish feedings run at set times. No pre-booking required but tickets can be purchased online. English signage is excellent throughout.
