Paddle a stable sea kayak through the 2,700 islands and skerries of Breiðafjörður Bay, one of Iceland's most biodiverse marine reserves. Encounter seals, eiders, and puffins from the water's surface — a perspective no boat can replicate.
What to expect
After a brief dry-land paddle briefing, you slip into a stable sit-on-top kayak fully equipped with a dry bag, buoyancy aid, and paddle gloves. Your certified sea-kayak guide leads you through a labyrinth of low skerries encrusted with barnacles and nesting birds, pausing to point out harbour seals hauled out on sun-warmed rocks. The bay's extraordinary clarity lets you watch kelp forests swaying beneath the hull. On a calm day, the reflections of sky and island in the glassy water are otherworldly.
Good to know
No prior kayak experience required — the guide assesses conditions and adapts the route. Tours depart from Flatey's small harbour; book West Tours in advance as summer capacity is very limited. Waterproof trousers and thermal base layers are provided but bring your own sunglasses. Allow 2.5 hours total including briefing. Confirm all-aboard time before paddling out.
