Descend into 18th-century tunnels hand-chiselled from 700 metres of solid limestone as British soldiers held off a four-year siege — then step onto the Sky Walk platform for a sheer-drop view of the Strait. History and adrenaline, perfectly paired.
What to expect
The tunnels are genuinely awe-inspiring in scale: carved with hand tools in the 1780s, they bristle with original cannon emplacements and offer glimpses through 'windows' blasted directly into the Rock face. A knowledgeable guide brings to life the 1779–1783 Great Siege, when 7,000 defenders repelled a combined Franco-Spanish force of 40,000. The Sky Walk glass platform, cantilevered over the east face of the Rock, delivers a vertiginous 360° panorama — Gibraltar town below, the Strait shimmering ahead, and the Atlas Mountains of Africa beyond.
Good to know
The Upper Rock is accessible by cable car (GBP 17 return) or taxi tour. Morning visits avoid the midday heat and tour-group crowds. Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes — tunnel floors are uneven. Allow 2.5–3 hours for a thorough visit with a guide.
