Glide up the Rock in the iconic cable car to meet Europe's only wild primates — the legendary Barbary Macaques — at Apes' Den, then linger at the summit for a golden-hour panorama of the Strait that will stop you in your tracks.
What to expect
The cable car ascends 412 metres in just four minutes, offering increasingly dramatic views over Gibraltar's rooftops, the Royal Navy dockyard and the glittering Strait. At Apes' Den, the macaques — descendants of North African animals, superstition says Gibraltar will remain British as long as they thrive — go about their social rituals with charming indifference to your camera. The Top of the Rock station delivers an uninterrupted panorama: Spain's Costa del Sol to the east, Morocco's Rif Mountains to the south, and the Atlantic opening westward.
Good to know
The cable car runs approximately every 15 minutes and can have queues mid-morning; the late afternoon is calmer and more atmospheric. Do not feed or touch the macaques — rangers enforce this strictly. Last descent is typically 19:15 in summer — check current times and cross-reference with your ship's all-aboard.
