Step ashore on the National Trust's enchanted Brownsea Island — a car-free, crowd-rare haven in the heart of one of the world's largest natural harbours. Home to one of England's last surviving colonies of native red squirrels, this is a genuinely rare wildlife encounter in an impossibly scenic setting.
What to expect
The short ferry crossing reveals sweeping views of Poole and the Purbeck Hills before you step onto a tranquil, forested island where peacocks roam freely along the woodland paths. Wander to the lagoon — a designated nature reserve — where wading birds and ducks gather in their hundreds. The resident red squirrels are remarkably confiding, often observed at close range in the Scots pine canopy. A castle, Victorian church and superb café complete the picture.
Good to know
Ferries depart regularly from Poole Quay; the crossing takes approximately 20–25 minutes. Allow at least 3 hours on the island. National Trust members enter free, so bring your membership card. Pre-book the return ferry time to stay comfortably within your all-aboard window. Flat, easy walking throughout.
