Board a lovingly restored narrow-gauge steam locomotive and glide through the heart of Eryri National Park — one of the most spectacular railway journeys in the British Isles. A living heritage experience that doubles as a scenic odyssey.
What to expect
The Welsh Highland Railway departs Porthmadog (10 minutes from Criccieth) and winds 25 miles through Beddgelert gorge and beneath the Snowdon massif to Caernarfon. Victorian-era carriages have been beautifully restored, and the open observation car is perfect for photography. At Beddgelert, disembark to explore the legendary grave of Gelert before re-boarding. The full return journey covers some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Wales.
Good to know
The railway runs from Porthmadog — a short taxi or drive from Criccieth harbour. Book First Class or observation seats directly on the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways website to guarantee the premium carriage. Check the timetable carefully against your all-aboard time; the Porthmadog–Beddgelert–return option fits most port days comfortably.
