Walk in the footsteps of Celtic saints and medieval pilgrims to the hauntingly beautiful ruins of St Mary's Abbey, the 13th-century Augustinian monastery said to be the burial place of 20,000 saints. A profoundly moving encounter with sacred Wales.
What to expect
The abbey's tower rises from a meadow of wildflowers, its worn stones radiating centuries of devotion. A knowledgeable Trust guide brings the Celtic pilgrimage tradition to life, explaining why three pilgrimages to Bardsey were once equated with one to Rome. You'll stand in the ancient graveyard, feel the silence of the sound, and understand entirely why this place was called the 'Land of Indulgences'. Allow at least two hours at the ruins alone.
Good to know
Access is only possible after the boat crossing (see Bardsey Boat Trips above). Wear sturdy walking shoes — the path to the abbey from the landing is uneven. The Trust's warden is based on the island and can be spoken to on arrival; no pre-booking for the guided walk is required beyond securing your boat place.
