Walk the only site in the world where a Greek colony and a Roman city were built side by side — Empúries, a 2,600-year-old living ruin on the sea's edge. With a private archaeologist guide, the mosaic floors, agora, and forum become vivid, human stories.
What to expect
Empúries is 35 km south of Roses (40 minutes by private car) on the Gulf of Roses. Your guide meets you at the main gate and leads you through the Greek neápolis first — the temple of Serapis, the agora, the ancient harbour wall — before crossing into the Roman city with its grand forum, patrician villas, and stunning in-situ mosaics. The site is rarely crowded in the morning. Afterwards, a swim at the adjacent sandy beach is practically obligatory.
Good to know
Combine with a stop in the village of L'Escala for a glass of cava and a plate of anchovies — the town is famous for them. Arrange your private guide through the museum's official contact or a specialist like ToursbyLocals; book entry tickets online. Allow 3–4 hours return including travel; well within a standard port-day window.
