Gozo's most revered pilgrimage church rises from open countryside with an almost otherworldly serenity. A private guided visit to Ta' Pinu — where miraculous healings have been recorded since 1883 — is a profoundly moving cultural and architectural experience.
What to expect
The Romanesque-Byzantine façade of Ta' Pinu appears almost floating above the Gharb valley, its creamy limestone glowing against an intensely blue sky. Inside, the walls of the original chapel are plastered with thousands of votive offerings — crutches, medical images, handwritten letters — left by the faithful over 140 years. The attached neo-Romanesque basilica (built 1920–31) is strikingly beautiful, its interior cool and hushed. The surrounding agricultural landscape, dotted with ancient rubble walls and wildflowers, is quintessential rural Gozo.
Good to know
Ta' Pinu is 25 minutes from Mgarr port in the village of Gharb. Modest dress required (shoulders and knees covered). Combine with a visit to the nearby Gharb Folklore Museum for a complete picture of traditional Gozitan life.
