Climb to Richard the Lionheart's 12th-century clifftop stronghold above the Seine and gaze across one of the most dramatic river panoramas in France. A genuine medieval jewel, almost unknown to non-specialist visitors.
What to expect
The ruined white-chalk fortress built by Richard I in under a year (1196–1197) crowns a 90-metre escarpment. Wander the inner keep, the distinctive triangular outer bailey, and the siege-tunnel network. The viewing platform delivers a sweeping 180° loop of the Seine that is among the finest river views in northern France. The twin-church village of Les Andelys below invites a leisurely café stop.
