Herculaneum VIP Access: Private Tour with an Archaeologist

Herculaneum is Pompeii's better-preserved, far less-visited twin — and exploring it privately with a resident archaeologist is one of the great intellectual privileges in all of Italy. Wooden furniture, mosaics, and frescoes survive here in extraordinary completeness.

What to expect

Enter through the main gate and immediately sense the difference from Pompeii: narrower streets, intact upper storeys, wooden beams carbonised but still in place. Your archaeologist unlocks houses usually closed to the public, revealing vivid wall paintings and inlaid floors. The Boat Houses, where hundreds of victims sheltered, deliver an emotional weight no photograph can prepare you for. Groups are small; questions are deeply welcomed.

Good to know

Herculaneum is 20 km from Naples port — closer than Pompeii. Private transfer or Circumvesuviana rail (Ercolano Scavi station, 15 min from Naples Centrale). Allow 2.5–3 hours on site. Pre-book restricted-house access directly with the Conservation Project team well in advance.
