Stroll the grand Skanderbeg Square, step inside the jewel-like Et'hem Bey Mosque, climb the Ottoman Clock Tower, then discover the once-forbidden Blloku district — communist elite enclave turned Tirana's coolest neighbourhood. The city's full story in one elegant walk.
What to expect
Begin at the vast, pedestrianised Skanderbeg Square — one of Europe's largest — beneath the towering equestrian monument to Albania's national hero. Enter the exquisite 18th-century Et'hem Bey Mosque with its rare frescoes of trees and waterfalls (unusual in Islamic art), then ascend the 35-metre Ottoman Clock Tower for rooftop views across the capital. Your guide then leads you into Blloku, once sealed off for the communist nomenklatura and now a buzzing grid of boutique cafés, street art and design shops. Stop for a perfectly pulled espresso — Albanians take their coffee seriously — before returning to the vehicle.
Good to know
This tour works best as a morning excursion before Tirana heats up. The walk is mostly flat and paved. Shoulders and knees should be covered to enter the mosque. Ask your guide to include the Pyramid of Tirana (Enver Hoxha's former mausoleum, now a creative hub) en route — it adds only 10 minutes.
