Journey to Kruja — the mountain citadel where Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg defied the Ottoman Empire for 25 years — exploring the castle, the National Skanderbeg Museum and a perfectly preserved Ottoman bazaar. Albania's most stirring historical excursion.
What to expect
A 45-minute scenic drive from Durres takes you up into the mountains to Kruja, perched dramatically at 568 metres with views across the Albanian plain to the Adriatic. Inside the castle walls, the National Skanderbeg Museum — designed by Enver Hoxha's own daughters — houses armour, manuscripts and dramatic frescoes celebrating Albania's greatest hero. Descend through the cobbled Ottoman bazaar, one of the Balkans' most authentic, where artisans still produce hand-crafted silver jewellery, kilims and antiques. Your guide weaves together 15th-century military history with living Albanian identity in a way that stays with you long after sailing.
Good to know
Kruja is approximately 45 minutes from Durres. Allow a full day (6–7 hours). The castle involves uphill cobblestone paths — sturdy footwear essential. Lunch at a traditional guesthouse restaurant near the bazaar is easily arranged by your guide. Confirm all-aboard time and build in a 90-minute buffer for the return drive.
