Go beyond the resort and step into authentic Fa'a Samoa (the Samoan Way) with a private cultural guide — traditional umu earth oven feast, master tatau (tattoo) demonstration, and a village kava ceremony with a paramount chief.
What to expect
A matai (chief) family hosts you in their open-air fale, welcoming you with a traditional ifoga greeting and garlands of frangipani. Watch the umu earth oven being unwrapped to reveal slow-cooked taro, palusami, and suckling pig before sitting cross-legged to feast together. A celebrated tatau master demonstrates the ancient hand-tap technique, explaining the genealogical stories encoded in each design. The afternoon closes with a kava ceremony where you drink alongside the chief, an honor rarely extended to visitors.
Good to know
Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) as a sign of respect. Apia port is walkable, but this village experience is 20 minutes inland — transport is included. Best booked 3+ weeks ahead; group maximum is strictly 6 for the chiefly household experience.
