Tonga is one of only a handful of places on the planet where it is legal and sustainable to snorkel in the open ocean alongside 40-tonne humpback whales. Witnessing a mother and calf pair from metres away is an encounter that redefines wildlife travel.
What to expect
Your marine-biologist guide scouts the whales by eye before the boat quietly idles close — then, on a hushed signal, you slip over the side. Humpbacks move at their own pace; mothers often rest near the surface while curious calves approach swimmers. The silence underwater, broken only by the whale's resonant song vibrating through your chest, is utterly otherworldly. Between encounters, the crew serves fresh tropical fruit and cold drinks on deck while the guide shares cetacean biology and Tongan conservation stories.
