Fanning Island's lagoon is one of the least-visited coral reef ecosystems in the entire Pacific — nearly untouched, teeming with manta rays, reef sharks, and iridescent reef fish. A guided drift snorkel through the pass channel is extraordinary marine spectacle.
What to expect
You board a traditional outrigger canoe and paddle to the lagoon pass as the outgoing tide begins — the natural current carries you effortlessly through an underwater canyon of staghorn coral while manta rays glide beneath. Your guide signals each encounter: a sleeping whitetip shark on the sandy bottom, a turtle grazing on coral rubble, a school of 500 yellowfin surgeonfish turning as one. After the drift, you wade ashore onto a beach with no roads, no buildings, and no footprints. A coconut cracked fresh from the palm is your only refreshment, and it is perfect.
