A UNESCO-listed medieval medina of souks, zaouias and mosques, the Medina of Tunis is one of North Africa's finest — and a private food-focused walk with a local expert is the most sensuous way to experience it. Harissa, brik, makroudh and tunisian mint tea await.
What to expect
Enter through the Bab el Bhar gate and immediately lose yourself in a labyrinth of perfumed souks — spice stalls blazing with harissa and cumin, silk merchants, goldsmiths and cheesemakers. Your guide pauses for a brik à l'oeuf at a neighbourhood counter, a tasting of local preserved lemons, and a glass of mint tea under a centuries-old arcade. Lunch at a hidden riad restaurant — perhaps a slow-braised lamb with preserved lemons — is the centrepiece before you explore the monumental Zaytouna Mosque courtyard.
Good to know
The Medina is ~30 minutes by private car from La Goulette. Wear modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered) as a mark of respect. The souks are most vibrant Tuesday–Saturday mornings. Agree a clear all-aboard departure time with your driver before you enter — it is easy to lose track of time inside.
