The Antonine Baths of Carthage at the water's edge, with the Gulf of Tunis turning gold behind Rome's giant column stumps, is among the Mediterranean's great photographic spectacles. A private late-afternoon tour with a local photography guide makes it a bucket-list visual experience.
What to expect
Your private vehicle collects you after the midday heat has softened and the tour groups have largely dispersed. At the Antonine Baths, you walk among the colossal granite column bases that once supported the third-largest Roman bath complex in the empire, with the sea just metres away. As the light warms, your guide leads you up to the Byrsa acropolis for a panorama over the entire ancient city and the bay beyond. The final stop is a quiet clifftop terrace — mint tea in hand — as the sun drops behind the Gulf.
Good to know
This experience works best when your ship allows an afternoon in port — confirm departure time carefully and allow 90 minutes' margin. Carthage is 20 km from La Goulette (~25 minutes by private car). The site involves uneven terrain; wear sturdy shoes. A mirrorless or DSLR camera will do the light justice, though modern smartphones are excellent here too.
