Chase the thunderous 80-foot Athirappally Falls — Kerala's most spectacular waterfall, set deep in a Teak and Rosewood forest — on a private full-day excursion from Cochin that feels like the end of the world.
What to expect
The drive northeast from Cochin winds through rubber plantations and tribal villages before the forest canopy closes overhead near Vazhachal. The first sound of Athirappally is the low roar that builds as you descend stone steps through the mist-drenched forest. Standing at the base, the sheer curtain of water — the largest in Kerala — crashing into the Chalakudy river is breathtaking in the literal sense. A guided forest trail through Vazhachal adds the chance to spot resident hornbills and spot-bellied eagle-owls. Return via the spice-trade town of Chalakudy for fresh toddy and Kerala banana chips.
Good to know
Athirappally is 75 km northeast of Cochin (approx. 1.5 hrs). Best visited on a dry-season port call (Oct–Feb); monsoon visits are dramatic but paths are slippery. Allow a full day (7–8 hrs); confirm all-aboard time. Private car hire is arranged directly at the cruise terminal taxi rank or pre-booked via Kerala Tourism.
