Descend into the atmospheric network of tunnels and coastal gun emplacements carved into Sabang's cliffs by Japanese forces during World War II. With a specialist local historian as your guide, this is living archaeology — dramatic, eerie, and utterly unique to Pulau Weh.
What to expect
The network of hand-carved tunnels runs directly into the coastal hillside, opening onto sea-facing gun platforms that once commanded the northern Malacca Strait approach. Rusted artillery mountings remain in situ; your guide narrates the Pacific theatre context and the fate of the island's wartime population. Torch in hand, you explore three to four distinct bunker complexes before emerging onto cliff-top viewpoints with sweeping ocean vistas.
Good to know
Wear closed-toe shoes — surfaces inside the caves are uneven and occasionally slick. Combine with the Km Zero scenic drive for the most efficient use of your port day. Sites are 20–35 min from the pier by private vehicle.
