Trek the protected interior rainforest of Pulau Weh with a specialist naturalist guide in search of endemic bird species, long-tailed macaques, and the island's extraordinary endemic frog fauna. One of Indonesia's most rewarding yet least-visited wildlife corridors — genuine wilderness within minutes of the pier.
What to expect
The trailhead begins at the forest edge just beyond Sabang town, rising quickly into dense dipterocarp canopy where endemic Sumatran species overlap with Weh Island's own isolated fauna. Your naturalist guide identifies bird calls before you see the birds — look for the Rufous-backed Kingfisher, Rhinoceros Hornbill, and White-handed Gibbon in the canopy. The trail crests a ridge with a panoramic view across the Andaman Sea before descending to a freshwater stream for a cool rest stop. Macaque troops are reliably encountered on the return leg.
Good to know
Wear lightweight long trousers and closed-toe trekking shoes; insect repellent is essential. The trek involves moderate exertion over 4–5 km of mixed terrain — good fitness recommended. Departs early morning for best wildlife activity; plan to be back aboard by early afternoon.
