Glide through mangrove estuaries to encounter thousands of wild flamingos in their natural habitat on a private lancha. One of Mexico's most spectacular wildlife spectacles — intimate, unhurried, and utterly unforgettable.
What to expect
Your private driver collects you from Progreso port and transfers you to the fishing village of Celestún on the Gulf coast. A licensed naturalist captain takes your group out on a flat-bottomed lancha through the biosphere reserve, where flocks of 10,000+ Caribbean flamingos feed in the shallows. You'll also spot roseate spoonbills, herons, and frigate birds. The boat pauses at a jungle-fringed freshwater cenote for a cooling swim before returning to the village for fresh ceviche at a seafront palapa.
Good to know
Celestún is ~90 km west of Progreso — approximately 1.5 hours by road. Plan for a full-day excursion (7–8 hours total). The flamingos are most active in early morning, so a 7 a.m. departure is ideal. Bring binoculars, a hat, and a light rain layer. Pre-book the private naturalist guide and boat in advance, as boat numbers in the reserve are regulated.
