Set foot on the Milford Track — the most celebrated walk in New Zealand — guided by a seasoned Fiordland ranger on a private day section that winds through ancient rainforest, past roaring rivers, and beneath the cliffs of the Clinton Valley. Pure wilderness on foot.
What to expect
A boat shuttle from Te Anau Downs delivers you to the track head, where you enter the beech forest canopy almost immediately. Your guide sets an unhurried pace past the towering walls of the Clinton Canyon, pausing to identify the call of a tōkoeka (Fiordland tokoeka kiwi) or the flash of a blue duck on the river. Lunch is taken on a grassy flat beside a crystal river before the return boat transfer. The final approach to the landing gives spectacular views back into the World Heritage valley.
Good to know
The walk covers up to 12–15 km depending on day-walk section; a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Depart from Te Anau — allow 2 hours travel each way from the Fiordland dock. Book directly with Ultimate Hikes; guided day-walk places are limited and sell out weeks in advance during the November–April season.
