Wade crystal-clear backcountry rivers where wild brown trout are individually spotted and cast to — sight-fishing in Fiordland's gin-clear streams is considered among the finest dry-fly experiences in the world. Your guide's knowledge is as finely tuned as the rods they hand you.
What to expect
Your guide meets you at Te Anau, assesses conditions overnight, and selects a river where large browns have been sighted. The morning is spent stalking fish through braided channels and beneath overhanging native bush — spotting a 5 kg trout finning in clear water before presenting a dry fly is an adrenaline rush unlike any other. Lunch is a gourmet riverside spread before the afternoon session on water that is invariably better for the midday rest. Even a non-fishing partner can accompany to photograph the experience.
Good to know
A basic casting ability is helpful but guides will coach beginners — what matters is patience and a keen eye. Licenses are arranged by the guide and included in the day rate. Confirm availability as soon as your cruise itinerary is set; guides book out months ahead, particularly October–April. Te Anau is the meeting point, approximately 1.5 hours from Manapouri.
