Atop Fourvière Hill, ancient Roman Lyon — Lugdunum, capital of the Three Gauls — is magnificently preserved. The 2,000-year-old theatres and the world-class Gallo-Roman Museum, built into the hillside, form one of Europe's most dramatic archaeological experiences.
What to expect
Your private guide meets you at the Fourvière funicular and ascends to the hilltop ensemble of Roman monuments. Standing in the Grand Théâtre — still used for concerts today — your guide conjures life in Lugdunum at the height of the Roman Empire: the processions, the performances, the political intrigue. The adjacent Gallo-Roman Museum, designed by architect Bernard Zehrfuss and burrowed into the hillside, presents astonishing finds including the Claudian Tablet, a bronze inscription of Emperor Claudius's speech to the Senate. The panoramic terrace view of Lyon at the end is simply spectacular.
Good to know
The funicular runs from Vieux Lyon metro station (line D); the ride takes 3 minutes. Museum open Tue–Sun 10am–6pm; closed Mon. The full private tour runs approx. 3 hours. Combine with the Basilica de Fourvière next door (free entry, 8am–7pm) to complete the Fourvière experience before heading back to the dock.
