Explore a working organic spice plantation in the lush Western Ghats foothills, guided by the farming family themselves. Cardamom, vanilla, nutmeg, and black pepper drape the canopy above you — then sit down to a lavish Goan lunch on a banana leaf.
What to expect
A shaded 90-minute guided walk takes you through dense spice groves where the guide strips a vanilla pod, cracks a cardamom husk, and lets you press fresh coconut oil. Exotic trees — jackfruit, breadfruit, clove — form a living canopy overhead. Lunch is a Goan thali: prawn curry, fish recheado, sol kadhi (coconut-kokum cooler) and rice, served on a banana leaf. The plantation is set beside a stream, making it blissfully cool even in the midday heat.
Good to know
Ponda (where most spice plantations are located) is 35–40 km from Mormugao Port. Book the plantation entry directly via tropicalspiceplantation.com; arrange private transfers separately through your hotel or a local operator. Wear light, breathable clothing and closed shoes. No stilettos — paths can be muddy after rain.
