Reach Mangaluru's most photogenic beach by a private ferry crossing the Gurupur River, then glide through the adjoining tidal backwaters at golden hour on a hand-paddled wooden canoe — a scene of extraordinary, unhurried beauty.
What to expect
Your driver takes you to the Gurupur River ferry ghat, where a traditional wooden ferry carries you across to Tannirbhavi Beach — a broad crescent of dark volcanic sand fringed by casuarina groves, almost entirely free of the crowds that pack Panambur. After time on the beach, your guide arranges a private canoe through the narrow backwater channels behind the beach, where egrets fish in the shallows and coconut palms lean over the water. As the sun drops, the light on the river turns the colour of turmeric — one of the most quietly beautiful moments on India's west coast.
Good to know
Best timed to arrive at the beach by 4 pm to catch the golden-hour canoe. Allow 4–5 hours total from the port. The ferry does not run after dark, so factor all-aboard time carefully — confirm with your guide before departure.
