Trek the wild Hopedale Barrens tundra plateau with a Labrador naturalist guide, spotting Arctic-breeding birds, caribou, and wildflowers in a pristine sub-Arctic landscape reached by almost no other traveller.
What to expect
Set off into the open tundra plateau above Hopedale village where dwarf birch, cloudberry, and Labrador tea carpet the ground in a mosaic of Arctic colour. Your expert naturalist guide identifies breeding Arctic terns, rough-legged hawks, and, in peak season, migrating shorebirds by the thousand. Woodland caribou are frequently encountered on the barrens; black bears appear in the berry patches. The 360-degree panorama from the high ground — sea, tundra, and sky — is one of the most dramatic vistas on the entire Labrador coast.
Good to know
Trailhead is accessible by short drive or walk from Hopedale dock. Wear layered, waterproof clothing; tundra terrain is boggy in places. Private groups of 2–6 ensure an unhurried, naturalist-focused experience. Half-day allows comfortable return before all-aboard. Best July–August for bird breeding season.
