Step aboard a Parks Canada guided tour to the world's best-preserved 16th-century Basque whaling station — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cross by ferry to Saddle Island to walk among skeletal chalupa boats, a sunken galleon, and centuries-old tryworks.
What to expect
A knowledgeable Parks Canada interpreter leads your small group on a 1-hour guided walk and ferry crossing to Saddle Island, where the remains of the San Juan galleon lie preserved in the icy harbour shallows. You'll examine the excavated chalupa (whaling boat) — the oldest and best-preserved craft of its kind anywhere — and stand inside reconstructed tryworks ovens where whale oil was rendered in the 1560s. The on-site Visitor Interpretation Centre houses extraordinary artifacts, including a near-complete chalupa and the skeletal remains of Basque whalers, presented with genuine scholarly depth. The entire experience rewards slow, contemplative exploration — this is living archaeology, not a theme park.
Good to know
Tours depart from the Red Bay NHS Visitor Centre on Main Street, a short walk from the pier. The guided walk and ferry tour runs approximately 1 hour; allow 2–2.5 hours total with the interpretation centre. Pre-booking is strongly advised in summer — call Parks Canada (1-888-773-8888) or book via the Parks Canada reservation portal. Confirm all-aboard time and leave at least 45 minutes buffer.
