Enter Sir Christopher Wren's masterpiece naval complex and stand inside the Painted Hall — James Thornhill's breathtaking ceiling took 19 years to complete and rivals anything in Rome. A stone's throw from the pier, this is the most underrated gem in Greenwich.
What to expect
The twin baroque domes and colonnades of the ORNC are a UNESCO World Heritage Site landmark seen from the river — but the interior surpasses even the exterior's promise. The Painted Hall's sky-blue ceiling swarms with allegorical figures, naval victories, and royal portraits executed in dazzling trompe l'oeil. Nelson's body lay in state here in 1805. The chapel opposite glows with Robert Adam-influenced plasterwork and a magnificent Benjamin West altarpiece.
