Explore the vast, wind-swept ruins of Hammershus, a 13th-century cliff-top fortress towering above the Baltic — the largest medieval castle complex in all of Scandinavia. A raw, unforgettable piece of Nordic history.
What to expect
A winding cliff-top path delivers you to the gatehouse of a fortress that has commanded the Baltic since 1255. Scramble through towers, walk medieval ramparts with open-sea views stretching to Sweden on clear days, and descend into the excavated undercroft. The small visitor centre contextualises the castle's dramatic history — Danish royalty, Swedish sieges, a prison for fallen nobles. On the walk back, heath and sea eagles soar on the thermals above the cliffs.
Good to know
Hammershus is approximately 25 km from Gudhjem — arrange a taxi or private car transfer (roughly DKK 350–450 each way). Allow 2–2.5 hours on-site. Wear sturdy shoes; the ruins involve uneven stone surfaces. Accessible by the Bornholm bus route 1 if self-organising.
