Lyrarakis Estate, a multi-award-winning Cretan winery, has spent decades rescuing indigenous grape varieties — Dafni, Plyto, Vilana — from near-extinction. A private hosted tasting in their hillside cellar is a masterclass in why Cretan wine is the Mediterranean's most exciting secret.
What to expect
The Lyrarakis estate sits in the rolling hills of Alagni, about 25 km south of Heraklion — a scenic 30-minute transfer through olive groves and vineyards. A sommelier walks you through 4–6 wines, explaining the volcanic soils, the altitude, and the millennia-old viticultural heritage of Crete (the Minoans made wine here 3,500 years ago). The tasting is paired with local honey, aged graviera cheese, and house-cured meats. The views from the terrace over the Cretan hills are a reason in themselves to make the journey.
Good to know
Arrange a private taxi or transfer from the port (approx. EUR 35–40 each way). Total excursion time is around 2.5–3 hours — very manageable before a late all-aboard. Pre-book your tasting directly with the estate via lyrarakis.gr, as private slots are limited. Open Monday–Saturday; confirm summer hours when booking.
