Discover two of the Scottish Borders' most compelling historic buildings — the ancient Coldingham Priory, founded by King Edgar in 1098, and the elegant Georgian Gunsgreen House, built on the profits of the most audacious smuggling operation in British history.
What to expect
A short taxi or 15-minute walk from St Abbs leads to Coldingham village, where the rosy sandstone ruins of the priory's Norman choir still serve as a parish church, its graveyard whispering centuries of Border history. Two miles on, Gunsgreen House presides theatrically over Eyemouth harbour — its hidden cupboards, false floors and secret stairways revealing the extraordinary double life of its builder, merchant and master smuggler John Nisbet. Informed local volunteers bring the contraband tales vividly to life.
Good to know
Gunsgreen House is open seasonally — check opening days at gunsgreenhouse.org before visiting. A local taxi from St Abbs Harbour to Eyemouth costs approx. GBP 8–10 each way. Combined visit takes 2.5–3 hours comfortably. Pre-purchase Gunsgreen entry online. Leave 45 minutes to return to the harbour for all-aboard.
