Pettico Wick & Coastal Wildflower Walk: Scenic Photography Hike

Follow the reserve's lesser-known coastal path down to the sheltered shingle cove of Pettico Wick — a hidden bay framed by lava-black cliffs, carpeted in summer wildflowers and utterly deserted, offering some of the most painterly photography on Scotland's east coast.

What to expect

Leaving the main clifftop trail, the path dips steeply through gorse and sea campion to the sheltered arc of Pettico Wick. The volcanic geology here is extraordinary — layers of ancient lava and sediment folded and fractured into natural sculpture. In spring and early summer, the slopes blaze with thrift, sea mayweed and yellow flag iris. The bay itself is completely sheltered, the water improbably clear and the silence profound. It is one of those rare places that feels entirely undiscovered.

Good to know

Accessible on foot directly from St Abbs Harbour — no transport required. The descent to Pettico Wick involves some rough, uneven terrain; sturdy footwear is essential. Allow 2–2.5 hours for the round trip at a comfortable pace. Check the NTS visitor centre for guided walk schedules on arrival. Ideal for photographers — morning light on the bay is exceptional.
