Stand inside one of the world's most atmospheric prehistoric monuments — older than Stonehenge — with a private local archaeologist decoding 5,000 years of Hebridean mystery. This is bucket-list Scotland at its most elemental.
What to expect
Your private guide collects you at the pier and drives you through the haunting Lewis moorland to Calanais. You'll have the circle — a dramatic cruciform of 50 standing stones and a central monolith rising 4.8m — largely to yourselves in the early morning. Your guide weaves together astronomy, archaeology, and local folklore, then takes you to the lesser-visited Calanais II and III satellite circles nearby. The visit ends with coffee and smoked-salmon sandwiches at the new Visitor Centre before a scenic return past the Broch of Carloway.
Good to know
The new Calanais Visitor Centre is due to open Spring 2026 — book ahead as this will increase footfall. All-aboard times on Lewis typically allow a generous 6–8 hours ashore. Pre-book your private guide at least 6 weeks out in summer. Stones are a 25-min drive from Stornoway or a 10-min drive from Carloway — clarify pier location with your operator.
