Mantes-la-Jolie's own Gothic masterpiece — begun in 1170, it inspired a young Chartres — deserves a proper guided exploration. Pair it with the remains of the medieval Vieux Pont and the tranquil Île-Aumône for the most atmospheric morning in port.
What to expect
Your guide meets you at the west portal of Notre-Dame de Mantes, whose triple-rose window rivals that of Paris in ambition. Inside, the height and luminosity of the 13th-century nave are breathtaking for a town this size. The walk continues downhill to the Seine embankment, where remnants of the ancient Vieux Pont jut from the water like stone sentinels. The Île-Aumône, a sliver of greenery mid-river, offers a serene final stop — willows trailing the Seine, herons fishing, complete calm.
Good to know
This is ideal as a morning excursion before a longer afternoon adventure. The church is a 10-minute walk from most dock positions. Contact the tourist office directly to arrange a licensed guide; half-day tours typically run 9:00–12:00.
