Just 20 km upstream, the Château de La Roche-Guyon cascades from a chalk cliff above one of the Seine's most pristine bends — a private half-day here feels like stepping into an 18th-century landscape painting. One of France's most beautiful villages, almost entirely undiscovered.
What to expect
A private car transfers you along the Seine's wooded right bank to the village, where the turreted château seems to grow organically from the white chalk. Your château guide leads you through subterranean rock-cut passages used by Rommel as his Western Europe HQ in 1944, then up to the restored formal gardens and the keep's panoramic terrace over the Seine valley. Back in the village, the weekly market and a riverside déjeuner at the local auberge make for a perfect finale. The whole excursion is back aboard with hours to spare.
