Discover the hauntingly atmospheric ruins of Bomarsund — the vast 19th-century Russian fortress blown apart by Anglo-French forces in the Crimean War — set dramatically across Åland's island landscape. One of the Baltic's most extraordinary and little-known historic sites.
What to expect
The sheer scale of Bomarsund's ambition is staggering — the Russians intended it to be the mightiest fortress in the Baltic, housing 5,000 soldiers. What stands today are evocative towers and crumbling walls draped in vegetation, set against a backdrop of glittering sea channels and pine islands. Interpretive panels in multiple languages bring the siege of 1854 to life with vivid detail. The landscape walk between the scattered remains is spectacular in summer light.
