Germany's national maritime museum houses a breathtaking fleet of historic vessels — including a 14th-century Hanseatic cog raised from the seabed — in a spectacular waterfront setting at the old harbour. Pure maritime magnificence.
What to expect
The centrepiece is the astonishing Bremer Cog, a 14th-century merchant vessel painstakingly preserved after its discovery in the Weser riverbed — a true archaeological marvel. Outside, the historic ship harbour lets you board a decommissioned U-boat, explore a traditional lightship and clamber over a Baltic steam icebreaker. The newly renovated exhibition galleries contextualise German seafaring from Viking longships to modern container logistics. A café overlooks the old harbour basin for a restorative break.
Good to know
Located directly on the Old Harbour (Alter Hafen), a 35–40 min walk or 10-min taxi from the cruise terminal. No advance booking required, but timed-entry for special exhibitions is advisable in peak season. Comfortable footwear essential — the ship decks involve steep ladders. Allow 2.5–3 hours.
