Walk among one of the Falklands' most accessible king and gentoo penguin colonies at Bluff Cove Lagoon — a wind-swept, impossibly photogenic beach where hundreds of birds waddle within arm's reach. Utterly bucket-list sub-Antarctic wildlife.
What to expect
A scenic 45-minute 4x4 transfer across rolling East Falkland farmland deposits you at the lagoon's driftwood-strewn beach. Gentoo penguins patrol the shoreline in the hundreds while the rarer king penguins pose imperiously on the dunes. A cosy tearoom serves homemade peat-fired scones with cream — a surreal luxury at the end of the world. Allow 2–3 hours on site.
Good to know
Book a private 4x4 transfer in advance through a Stanley operator (e.g. Falkland Islands Tours & Travel). The site itself charges a small entrance fee on arrival. All-aboard is typically 17:00; leaving Bluff Cove by 14:30 is comfortable. Wear windproof layers and sturdy boots — the beach is exposed.
