Join a professional polar photographer on deck and ashore for a hands-on workshop shooting icebergs, wildlife, and the Antarctic light — the most technically challenging and uniquely rewarding photography environment on the planet. Return home with images as extraordinary as the journey.
What to expect
Your photographer-guide meets the group on deck at dawn — Antarctic light at this latitude can be extraordinary at 5 a.m. — and runs a 30-minute briefing on white-balance, exposure compensation for snow, and burst-mode for penguin action. During Zodiac excursions, the guide positions the craft for optimal iceberg backlight and coaches each participant through the shot. Ashore, you learn to read penguin behaviour to anticipate the decisive moment — a jump, a squabble, a chick feed. Evening review sessions over the ship's lecture space break down the day's best frames with constructive critique. You leave Antarctica with a portfolio, not just snapshots.
Good to know
Works best with a mirrorless or DSLR camera; smartphone participants are welcome but get most from the compositional coaching. A protective dry bag for your gear is essential — Zodiac spray and sudden snow squalls are inevitable. Book with Chimu Adventures well in advance; their Antarctic programmes sell out 12–18 months ahead. Confirm your expedition's call at Deception Island or Cuverville Island to align the workshop's best shooting days.
