Deception Island: Volcanic Caldera & Historic Whaling Station

Sail through Neptune's Bellows — a dramatic breach in an active volcanic caldera — to land inside Deception Island, one of Antarctica's most surreal addresses. Black-sand beaches, ruined whaling-era factories, and steaming fumaroles make this a bucket-list convergence of history, geology, and raw beauty.

What to expect

Zodiacs pass through the narrow caldera entrance — the cliff walls close enough to touch — revealing a vast flooded crater ringed by snow-dusted volcanic ridges. On shore at Whalers Bay, the rusted bones of Norwegian factory ships and boilers emerge from the black sand, a hauntingly preserved record of the 1920s whaling industry. Steam vents warm the sand near the waterline, and in summer brave guests dig shallow pools for a geothermal 'Antarctic swim'. A naturalist-historian guides you through the Argentine and British base ruins left after the 1969 volcanic eruption.

Good to know

Landings at Deception Island are subject to IAATO site limits — arrival time matters. The volcanic sand can stain light-coloured clothing; wear darker expedition trousers. The 'polar plunge' in the geothermal shallows is optional but legendary — bring a swimsuit just in case.
