Trek through Sumba's wild savanna hinterland to reach Tanggedu, a tiered waterfall plunging into a sheer-sided canyon of golden sandstone — rated 4.7 stars and one of East Sumba's best-kept secrets. A genuinely off-the-beaten-path adventure.
What to expect
The journey to Tanggedu is half the adventure: open 4WD travel across East Sumba's bone-dry savanna, with wild horses grazing near the track and traditional Sumbanese villages passing by the window. A short descent through scrub brings you to the canyon rim, where multiple tiers of cascades drop into rock pools tinted turquoise by volcanic minerals. Swimming is possible at the lower pools. Your guide packs cold drinks and local snacks, and the return route can be varied to include Wairinding Hill.
Good to know
This excursion requires approximately 5–6 hours; confirm your ship's all-aboard time before booking. The track involves a 4WD vehicle — not suitable for those with limited mobility. Best in the wet-to-dry shoulder season (April–May) when the falls are full but roads passable. Contact Authentic Indonesia well in advance as capacity is very limited.
