Watch wild-born orangutans descend from the rainforest canopy to the feeding platform at Sepilok — one of only four such sanctuaries on Earth. A profound, bucket-list encounter with Borneo's most iconic great ape in its natural habitat.
What to expect
The rainforest boardwalk leads to a semi-open feeding platform where rangers lay out fruit for orangutans still transitioning to full independence. The morning 10 AM feed draws the most individuals, including mothers with clinging infants. A separate Nursery Viewing Gallery lets you observe the youngest rescued babies in a controlled setting. The surrounding 4,294-hectare reserve is alive with hornbills, macaques, and the scent of damp jungle.
Good to know
Sepilok is 25 km from Sandakan Port — roughly 35 minutes by private car (recommended; approx. MYR 80–100 return). Morning feeding is at 10:00 AM; all-aboard permitting, the afternoon feed at 3:00 PM is a quieter option. No flash photography; wear muted colours. Pre-purchase entry via the Sabah Wildlife Department site to avoid queues.
