Drift through the jungle-fringed Kinabatangan — Malaysia's second-longest river — at dusk, when proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, and crocodiles converge on the banks. A private boat at golden hour is among the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in all of Southeast Asia.
What to expect
Board a narrow wooden river boat at one of the Kinabatangan lodges (~2.5 hours from Sandakan). As the light drops golden, proboscis monkeys with their bulbous noses crash through riverside trees, heading to roost. The guide scans the banks with a spotlight for saltwater crocodiles, fishing owls, and the shy oriental darter. Birding is world-class: eight hornbill species share this corridor. The river itself — wide, brown, and ancient — feels genuinely wild.
Good to know
The drive to Sukau (the prime stretch) is ~2–2.5 hours each way from Sandakan Port — best suited to ships with a late all-aboard or an overnight call. Confirm with Borneo Adventure for a private day-trip configuration. Lightweight long sleeves and insect repellent are essential. Book well in advance as private boats are limited.
