Come face-to-face with the proboscis monkey — a creature found nowhere on Earth outside Borneo — at a dedicated private sanctuary carved from a palm-oil estate turned conservation success story. Feeding platforms bring wild troops within metres of you.
What to expect
The sanctuary lies within a working plantation, yet the contrast couldn't be more striking: wild proboscis monkeys — pot-bellied, long-nosed, and magnificently absurd — swing in from the mangrove fringe at feeding time. Two platforms allow close-range photography. A second species, the silver-leaf langur, often joins the spectacle. The feeding platform area is intimate and rarely crowded during weekday morning sessions.
Good to know
Labuk Bay is approximately 30 km / 40 minutes north of Sandakan Port. The 9:30 AM feeding session is ideal for cruise passengers; confirm all-aboard time with your ship. Hire a private driver from Sandakan (approx. MYR 150–180 return). No pre-booking required for standard entry, but contact the sanctuary directly to arrange a private guide.
