The world-famous mosaic staircase of Jorge Selarón leads into Santa Teresa — Rio's bohemian hillside neighbourhood of 19th-century mansions, indie galleries, and the city's finest choro music. A feast for the senses.
What to expect
You meet your guide at the foot of the Escadaria Selarón — 215 steps covered in over 2,000 tiles from 60 countries, each with a story Selarón himself embedded before his death. Ascending into Santa Teresa, you wind through cobblestoned streets past the Museu Chácara do Céu and the iron-lace balconies of the Belle Époque mansions. Your guide introduces you to working artists in their ateliers and finds a sun-drenched terrace overlooking the bay for a fresh caipirinha. The bonde (heritage tram) rumbles past — the living soundtrack of the quarter.
Good to know
The Selarón Steps are approx. 20 min from Copacabana by private car. A half-day runs 3.5–4 hours — ideal for morning port calls. Contact Gregtur directly to arrange Camila or another specialist guide. Wear comfortable shoes; the cobblestones are beautiful but uneven. Carry BRL cash for gallery purchases and refreshments.
